​In early 1999, Nissan was floundering as a car manufacturer. It had gone from producing four of the top cars in the world to the verge of its credit status being downgraded to “junk” level from “investment grade” (Milliken & Fu, 2005). The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nissan reached out to Renault and aligned the companies in an effort to boost market share for Renault and helping Nissan to keep their “investment grade” status (Milliken & Fu, 2005). The alliance came with a request from the Nissan CEO that Charles Ghosn be named the Chief Operating Officer of Nissan, becoming the first non-Japanese person to hold that position with the company (Milliken & Fu, 2005).
